Why is Bogazici University considered so great in Turkey although it actually is at 400th position in the QS world rankings?

Another question from Quora.

The answer is that the QS rankings favour universities with an established reputation in those countries that are interested in rankings, those that have extensive international linkages, those with a lot of faculty and those with strengths in medical research.

In contrast, the Times Higher Education  (THE) rankings favour those powered by hadron driven citations and with the good fortune to be located in countries where most universities produce few citations.

What will happen if THE does reform its citations indicator?

  1. The government should be blamed for not taking actions against the government schools which have fail to give quality education. On the other hand we get higher education from private schools but we have to pay a lot for it.

Let me explain to you. I agree partly with the citation part, but you dont know about Turkish educational system it seems. Bogazici is not as good as Boston University when it comes to the quality of the lectures. But can be considered on parry or even better them Sorbonne. The school "actually" teaches in English, all the lecturers have gotten their phds from US universities which is like an informal condition to teach there. You can see Berkeleys, Santa Barbaras, NYUs which is extremely rare for a country with such shitty education system. Besides, in order to get into the school you have to score extremely high on a shitty exam which does not decide who s smarter but definitely indicates the lack of intelligence of some persons thru their inability to score high on a shitty exam. Thank you. Now, leave my country alone. It really needs help, and sadly enough Bogazici is the only place where you can find people with such capability.
