Alexandria University

According to the THE rankings Alexandria University in Egypt (no. 147 overall) is the fourth university in the world for research impact, surpassed only by Caltech, MIT and Princeton.

Alexandria is not ranked by Shanghai Jiao Tong University or HEEACT. It is way down the SCImago rankings. Webometrics puts it in 5,882nd place and 7,253rd for the "Scholar" indicator.

That is not the only strange result for this indicator, which looks as though it will spoil the rankings as a whole.

More on Alexandria and some other universities in a few hours.

I note that the American Diabetes Association is based in Alexandria, VA, as is the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and the American Association for Clinical Oncology. A quick look at Web of Science tells me that these US associations have some very highly-cited articlesm, whereas the Univ of Alexandria does not.

I find the THE rankings nonsense... they claim all over their new methodology and change of data partner etc...result is more visibility for US and far less visibility for the rest of the world... I susupect Thomson Reuters to collect more anglo-saxon data than anything else...PFFFF!!!!!!

If you want to know who is the mysterious researcher who propelled the University of Alexandria out of obscurity, you need to look no further than the section "Chaos, Solitons & Fractals" at . At least he was replaced as editor, so I suppose that his research output will now drop dramatically....

Interesting post!

Richard, is it possible for you to publish (or email me for me to publish) the rankings containing the odd placement of Alexandria University? I think you must be referring to something hidden behind a paywall.

Andrew 6:04 PM, notice this is about Alexandria in Egypt, not Alexandria in Virginia.
