There are 130 universities in the UK and the vice-chancellors of more than 103 of them have signed a letter praising the role of the European Union in supporting the UK's world-class universities.
There are some notable names missing, University College London, Manchester, Warwick and York but such a high degree of consensus among the higher bureaucracy is rather suspicious.
It seems to me that the attitude of implying that consensus always hides something fishy is rather paranoid. No doubt it may; but it may just be that the point over which consensus is reached should not really be controversial. I believe this is the case of supporting the EU: what is suspicious is that a significant part of politicians claim straight-faced that leaving the EU is a good idea.

This is probably the only issue where the vast majority of academia, at all levels, agree on something. EU membership is a real no-brainer amongst my colleagues. We've all seen how ERC funding can create research programs no one else would have funded, we all see the ERC as something which is a last bastion of impact-free blue skies funding. And we all work with a large number of outstanding European colleagues.
